From October 2022 to December 2025, the international ITEA project GenerIoT developed a shared, automated way to build and maintain software for IoT devices. The project had 19 partners from four countries, and it received the ITEA Award of Excellence 2026 in the Collaboration category. Loopshore was one of the partners: we made measuring devices for the project, installed in wind turbines, telecom operators' equipment rooms, buildings and ice rinks.
What the project did
Software for IoT devices has to be lightweight and secure, and it has to be possible to update it on devices that are already in use. GenerIoT (Generating and Deploying Lightweight, Secure and Zero-overhead Software for Multipurpose IoT Devices) developed a shared and automated approach to this that covers the software's whole life cycle from development to maintenance.
The consortium was led by the German Infineon Technologies AG. ITEA granted the award to the whole consortium in June 2026, and it was presented in Istanbul in September.
What Loopshore did
Loopshore made measuring devices for the project's demonstrators, in which the project's shared development approach was tested in practical applications. The devices were installed at four different kinds of test site: wind turbines, telecom operators' equipment rooms, buildings and ice rinks.
At the test sites we worked with two Finnish partners. Granlund was responsible for the wind turbines, the equipment rooms and indoor conditions in buildings, and Suomen Tekojää for the ice rinks. Unikie carried out a security assessment of our demonstrator.
Ice Metrics
Ice Metrics was productised in the project. It is a measuring solution targeted at the conditions of ice rinks: it continuously monitors the ice temperature and the indoor conditions of the rink. During the project, its data was used to improve the ventilation of several ice rinks.
Since the project ended, Ice Metrics has been taken into commercial use in ice rinks.
“More than three years is a long time for a small company. The project left us with measuring devices taken into the field, a productised solution for ice rinks and a network of partners we worked well with. Through contacts made in the project, we also gained a significant new customer, and through them our devices have reached several countries.”

More about the project
GenerIoT is an ITEA project. ITEA is the Eureka Cluster on software innovation. In Eureka projects, the partners in each country are funded by their own country's public funder, and Loopshore's part was funded by Business Finland.
The project's details are on ITEA's project page, and the awards are described in ITEA's news item. GenerIoT has appeared on our pages before: the project made possible an Aalto University master's thesis in which continuous measurement was used to study indoor sports facilities.
